Weatherproof your furry friends with specialized insurance plan

With the shifting weather patterns causing health concerns for humans, pets are not immune to the effects of fluctuating temperatures. Just as people are susceptible to seasonal allergies, respiratory problems, and discomfort from sudden weather changes, pets, too, face similar challenges.

Insurtech firm Igloo, in partnership with Malayan Insurance and GCash, recently launched Pet Insure, a specialized insurance product designed to protect pets from weather-related health risks.

The changing weather in tropical regions like the Philippines, where hot and humid days are often followed by sudden rain or cooler temperatures, can be particularly tough on pets. Breeds such as pugs and chow chows, for example, are more prone to respiratory issues and heat strokes, making them especially vulnerable.

Igloo’s Pet Insure offers a three-in-one insurance package that provides comprehensive coverage for unexpected pet health expenses, empowering pet owners to take better care of their furry companions.

Pet Insure aims to protect pets from health risks caused by the ever-changing weather conditions

For as low as P650 per month, Pet Insure covers medical reimbursements for veterinary care of up to P100,000, ensuring that pets can receive the care they need during emergencies. Additionally, the plan includes owner’s liability coverage of up to P250,000 and personal accident cover for pet owners worth P50,000.

Available through the GCash GInsure marketplace, Pet Insure provides a financial safety net that allows dog owners to focus on keeping their pets healthy without worrying about unexpected veterinary bills.

Pet owners are encouraged to take preventive steps to protect their animals during times of fluctuating weather. Providing climate-appropriate shelter is critical—ensuring pets have warm spaces during cold spells and shaded areas during hotter days. Some breeds are particularly sensitive to extreme heat, and precautions such as limiting outdoor activity during peak temperatures can help prevent heat stroke.

A rule of thumb is that if it’s too hot for human feet, it’s likely too hot for a pet’s paws.

Maintaining a nutritious diet that supports a pet’s immune system is important, especially when weather-related illnesses arise. Adequate hydration prevents dehydration and heat exhaustion in hot climates, while regular grooming helps regulate body temperature. However, owners should avoid shaving pets’ fur too short to prevent sunburn.

Being alert to signs of illness, like excessive scratching or rapid breathing, is crucial, especially for overheating in hot climates like ours.
