How to protect pets during rainy season

With another typhoon causing torrential rains and rising floods across the country, one of the things pet owners should consider is the safety of their pets.

Since a pet’s safety is the responsibility of its owner, the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) has shared a few reminders on how to keep them safe during stormy weather.

Preparation is key when it comes to disasters, so it is important to have an evacuation plan in place in case of emergencies, especially when there are threats of floods or landslides in the area. Pet owners should also have an emergency kit filled with essentials such as pet food, water, first aid supplies, and medical records.

It is also crucial that pet owners know how and where they can safely transport their pets. If carriers aren’t available, items such as laundry baskets and basins can be used as makeshift alternatives for transporting pets.

While pets should never be left behind during disasters, there are cases where pet owners cannot take them while evacuating. In such situations, it is important to leave pets uncaged and unchained, giving them a chance to survive.

PAWS has also urged the public to extend help to stray animals encountered during storms. Whether by providing food and water, shelter, or veterinary care, any effort can help ensure animals are safer during these difficult times.
