The eastern part of Albay has been placed under tropical cyclone wind signal (TCWS) no. 1 as tropical storm ‘Leon’ approaches, prompting acting Governor Baby Glenda Ong-Bongao to implement safety measures.
In an advisory issued by the Albay Public Safety and Emergency Management Office on Monday, October 28, 2024, residents in Tiwi, Malinao, Malilipot, Tabaco, Bacacay, Santo Domingo, Rapu-Rapu, and Manito are alerted to potential heavy rain and cloudy skies expected to impact the region.
To ensure public safety, the provincial government suspended in-person classes across all private and public schools in Albay effective October 29, 2024, until further notice. Additionally, all types of sea vessels are prohibited from sailing in areas under TCWS No. 1 due to expected rough sea conditions.
Bongao called on local government Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils (DRRMCs) to monitor their areas closely, particularly those prone to flooding, flash floods, and landslides.
These councils are advised to be ready for evacuation operations, maintain 24-hour monitoring, and stay updated on the latest weather bulletins.
