The House of Representatives resumed its session today with Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez stressing the role of the 300-plus-strong chamber to strengthen oversight functions after the successful completion of its legislative priorities.

Congress was able to approve all 20 priority measures outlined by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and the Legislative Executive Development Advisory Council before the Holy Week break in March, surpassing the June target by three months.

The achievement did not only highlight Congress’ dedication to promptly addressing critical legislative matters but also paved the way for a renewed emphasis on oversight functions.

“Having effectively discharged our legislative duties, the House is positioned to enhance its commitment to oversight functions,” the Speaker said.

The House’s oversight functions included monitoring and evaluating the implementation of laws and policies, ensuring accountability, transparency, and the protection of the public interest.

“Through rigorous oversight, the House will actively engage in scrutinizing government actions, addressing inefficiencies, and safeguarding the integrity of our democratic institutions,” Romualdez said.

With the resumption of sessions, Congress shall prioritize three major issues within its oversight functions — the persistently high prices of rice and other essential commodities, pressing cybersecurity threats confronting government agencies, and contentious issues concerning the West Philippine Sea.

Romualdez said Congress is also deeply concerned about the widening disparity between farmgate and retail prices of essential commodities, particularly rice.
