The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Saturday announced the Philippines and Indonesia have agreed to strengthen law enforcement collaboration, focusing on cross-border crime and security challenges.
“The case of Alice Guo is just one example, but there are many criminals who might use similar escape routes. That’s why we spoke with the Indonesian police to make this kind of cooperation permanent,” Interior Secretary Benjamin Abalos said in a news forum.
“Indonesia has large water borders, and so do we. We only have a few boats and helicopters to patrol. So, there will be talks, an exchange of information, and joint operations,” he added.
Guo, who had been hiding in Indonesia, was arrested in Tangerang City on Wednesday then brought back to the Philippines on Friday.
In addition to Philippine offshore gaming operator (POGO)-related crimes, Abalos pointed to other common issues that both nations face, including illegal drugs and smuggling.
“This will be the start of something big because we have common enemies—drugs, smuggling, and more. We’ve even traced some operations passing through the Philippines,” Abalos said.
