DILG spearheads local governance conference

Some 3,000 local executives have attended the Local Governance (LG) Summit 2024 at the Philippine International Convention Center, which aims to strengthen relations and cooperation among local and national government officials.

According to Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr., the summit, organized by the DILG in partnership with the Union of Local Authorities of the Philippines (ULAP), seeks to further improve and strengthen the quality of service provided by local governments to the people.

With the theme “LGUs in the New Philippines: Smart. Resilient. Driven.”, the activity with the help of national government agencies, will feature sessions on digital transformation; smart urban infrastructure; and design; climate and disaster resilience. Social protection will also be discussed; peace and order; transparency and accountability; and people’s participation.

Also featured are the best practices in technology and innovation; and the delegates will strive to develop cooperation and network of local governments for the exchange of knowledge.

Abalos said the activity was in response to a directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to intensify cooperation between local and national governments.

He added that the summit also seeks to strengthen local government administration, more effective public service and speed up the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
