China files protest vs. PCG vessel in Escoda Shoal

China filed a “formal protest” against the presence of Philippine Coast Guard vessel BRP Teresa Magbanua in Escoda Shoal, according to a report from the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry reiterated China’s disputed claims over the West Philippine Sea, asserting its so-called “illegal rights” and insisting on the validity of its controversial nine-dash line.

The ministry warned that it would take “resolute action” if the Philippines does not withdraw its vessel from the area.

“China has protested to the Philippines through diplomatic channels and asked the Philippines to stop its infringement activities and withdraw the vessel at once,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry said.

“China is closely monitoring the developments and will take resolute measures to safeguard its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests and uphold the sanctity of the DOC,” it added.

The Philippine government deployed the BRP Teresa Magbanua to Escoda Shoal, marking the longest Coast Guard deployment in the West Philippine Sea, according to Commodore Jay Tarriela, spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea of the Philippine Coast Guard.
