Customs agents assigned at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport have intercepted two shipments of smuggled bearded dragons and Argentine lizards at the Central Mail Exchange Center in Pasay City.

Port of NAIA collector Carmelita Talusan said the two parcels contained 22 bearded dragons and six Argentine black and white lizards, with an estimated market value of P210,000.

The shipments came from Samutprakarn, Thailand and were consigned to residents of Paranaque City. Both parcels were misdeclared as “children’s toys” and were shipped by a certain Anuphop Wilit.

“Through the vigilance of our Customs-NAIA personnel, these parcels were subjected to x-ray and 100% physical examination, which led to the discovery of live Bearded Dragons and Tegus,” said Talusan.

Talusan said her men conducted the operations in coordination with the Customs Enforcement and Security Service – Environmental Compliance and Protection Division (ESS-EPCD).

The lizards were immediately turned over to the Wildlife Monitoring Unit of Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for proper handling and safekeeping pursuant to Customs Administrative Order No. 10-2020.

Talusan said the Bureau of Customs under the leadership of Commissioner Rey Leonardo Guerrero is supporting the initiatives of the DENR in upholding the conservation and protection of wildlife and preventing wildlife smuggling.

Last year, the Port of NAIA was recognized by the DENR for its accomplishments and commitment to border protection and civic duty to protect the environment.

The DENR gave Bronze, Silver, and Gold awards to Customs NAIA officials and personnel for their accomplishments and contributions in protecting wildlife and promoting biodiversity in the country.

The event coincides with the launching of mobile applications aimed to help environmental law enforcement officers in carrying out their duties.

One of the apps dubbed eCITES PH and eLearning Modules, which would provide necessary information on environment protection as well as venue for online application of wildlife permits.

The other app is called the Wildlife Philippines Podcast, which aims to promote up-to-date information dissemination through the use of podcasts.
