Abby Binay files COC for Senate; vows to focus on social health programs

Makati Mayor Abigail Binay on Friday filed her certificate of candidacy (COC) for the Senate, prioritizing legislation to amend the local government code.

“I would like to focus on three things; improving and expanding social programs for our people particularly in health and education, and stronger local governments that are resilient and sustainable thus strengthening our nation’s capability to respond to the challenges of climate change,” she said after turning in her COC.

The Makati mayor is included in the Marcos administration’s senatorial slate for the 2025 midterm elections, seeking to succeed her term-limited sister, Senator Nancy Binay.

In turn, Nancy will be running for Makati’s mayoralty post against Abby’s husband, incumbent Makati Congressman Luis Campos.

Abby is a new party member of the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC), which previously signed a coalition agreement with the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas led by President Marcos.

She was listed as one of the most preferred senatorial bets in next year’s polls based on the Pulse Asia Research survey.

Under Binay’s leadership, Makati has received the first-ever ‘unqualified audit opinion’ from the Commission on Audit in 2017, confirming that the city’s financial statements accurately represent its accounts.

Additionally, in 2017, the local government posted a significant increase in revenue collections and met the performance target set by the Bureau of Local Government Finance (BLGF) under the Department of Finance.

Binay’s administration achieved the highest revenue collection in years without increasing taxes.

In her first six months in office, from July to December 2016, the city government surpassed the revenue collection for the same period in 2015 by over P600 million.
