The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), together with its partners, is preparing to establish a centralized traffic data platform aimed at improving urban mobility across the National Capital Region.
The initiative is expected to streamline traffic management and deliver more efficient, data-driven solutions to address the complex transport needs of Metro Manila’s more than 13 million residents.
The plan was discussed during the MMDA’s second Joint Coordination Committee meeting with local and national government officials, as well as members of the academic community.
Progress reports and upcoming activities under the Capacity Enhancement on Traffic Management with Improvement of Intelligent Transportation Systems for Metropolitan Manila (MMITS) project were presented in the meeting.
MMDA Chairman Romando Artes said the project’s milestones signal tangible progress toward safer roads in Metro Manila.
“From strengthening planning capacities, pilot projects will now be implemented to create a centralized traffic data platform to improve urban mobility in the NCR,” Artes said.
MMDA Deputy Chairman and MMITS Project Director Undersecretary Frisco San Juan Jr. said the initiative goes beyond easing congestion.
“We are not only improving traffic flow; we are also shaping the future of mobility in the NCR that meets the needs of every road user,” San Juan said.
The MMDA also thanked the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), led by JICA Philippines Senior Representative Takanori Morishima, for its support of the MMITS project.
“With the continued partnership of JICA and the unwavering dedication of all stakeholders, I am confident that we are not only shaping a traffic system—but we are shaping the future,” Artes said.
“Let us take what we have started here and turn it into a Metropolitan Manila that moves, thrives, and inspires.”
During the meeting, leaders of three Technical Working Groups presented ongoing initiatives and planned activities for the implementation of the MMITS project.
The MMITS project website has also been launched to provide information to stakeholders and promote transparency. It can be accessed at https://mmda.gov.ph/home-mmits.html.
