The MRT-3 management has issued an apology following social media backlash over unauthorized signage at the Shaw Boulevard Station.
The signage, placed at the base of an escalator, read: “Each step you climb is a gift to your heart, lungs, and muscles.”
The messaging drew sharp criticism from commuters, who viewed the sign as an insensitive response to accessibility needs rather than a helpful health tip.
The DOTr-MRT3 clarified that upon learning of the issue, the agency immediately removed the signage, noting that it does not reflect the official position of the transport office.
“On the contrary, the convenience of the commuters is always our paramount concern and priority,” the agency said.
The agency further explained that the signage—an unsanctioned initiative by a station supervisor—was unnecessary and poorly communicated.
“There was no need for such signage since all escalators are operational; it only caused confusion and misunderstanding. Again, such signage was entirely unnecessary,” DOTr-MRT3 said.
DOTr-MRT3 apologized for the incident, stressing that there was never any intention to diminish the experiences or concerns of the public.
“We recognize the importance of listening, especially when issues regarding the accessibility, comfort, and safety of our commuters are raised,” the agency added.
In response to the incident, DOTr Secretary Banoy Lopez and General Manager Michael Capati have issued stern instructions that any reported equipment malfunctions must be addressed immediately, with repairs prioritized to ensure minimal disruption.
“The comfort, safety, and trust of the riding public remain our foremost priorities. We remain committed to maintaining our facilities and improving the commuting experience for everyone,” DOTr-MRT3 said.
