Authorities confiscated more than P1.1 million worth of smuggled cigarettes and arrested two individuals during an operation in Dagupan City, Pangasinan, on Saturday.
The Dagupan City Police Office reported that the suspects—both drivers—are a 36-year-old resident of Caloocan City and a 35-year-old from Villasis town. They were arrested during an entrapment operation in Barangay Bonuan Binloc.
Authorities said they acted on verified information that the suspects were involved in the delivery and sale of smuggled cigarettes in Dagupan City and nearby areas.
During the operation, the suspects admitted that the cigarettes were smuggled and sold at lower prices, according to the police report.
Prior to the arrest, operatives posed as buyers and arranged a controlled delivery of two boxes of cigarettes worth P56,000, which led to the confiscation of 26 additional boxes.
“All confiscated items were turned over to the Bureau of Customs as evidence for the filing of appropriate charges,” the report said.
Ilocos Police Regional Office Director Brig. Gen. Dindo Reyes said the successful operation reflects the police force’s firm stance against illegal activities in the region.
“We acknowledge that smuggling is a national challenge that weakens the economy, which is why we are committed to stopping the supply chain of smuggled goods,” Reyes said in a statement.
