The Commission on Elections (Comelec) said Wednesday it will not push through with the printing of ballots for the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region In Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) 2025 elections.

This developed as Malacañang announced that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. certified as urgent the bill suspending the Bangsamoro parliamentary elections this May.

In a Viber message, Comelec chairperson George Erwin Garcia said the Comelec will defer the printing of ballots intended for the BARMM polls.

Garcia said the ongoing ballot printing shall only cover those which will be used for the 2025 national and local elections.

“The reason is because we may end up opening the filing of candidacy anew for the region in the event of redistricting as a result of reapportionment of the slots originally assigned to Sulu,” he explained.

The BARMM election was initially proposed to be moved from May 12, 2025 to August 11, 2025.

The Senate has approved on second reading a proposed measure resetting the first regular elections in (BARMM) to October 2025.

There are also proposals resetting the election and synchronizing it with the 2028 national elections, and every three years thereafter.
