4 in 10 Filipinos back impeachment bids against VP Sara Duterte—SWS

Four in 10 Filipinos are in favor of the potential impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte, Social Weather Stations (SWS) recent report revealed.

Commissioned by Stratbase Consultancy, the survey was conducted from December 12 to 19, 2024, with 2,160 adult respondents and a margin of error of +/-2%. It revealed that 41% of respondents are in favor of VP Duterte’s impeachment, 35% oppose it, and 19% remain undecided.

Support for impeachment is highest in Balance Luzon, where 50% of respondents are in favor. In the Visayas, 40% agree with the impeachment, while 33% disagree, and 24% are undecided.

Meanwhile, Mindanao, considered Duterte’s bailiwick, recorded the lowest support at 22%, with 56% opposing the impeachment.

“Results from the same survey also show that 46% of Filipinos believe that the unexplained spending of confidential and intelligence funds by the Office of the Vice President and the Department of Education at 46% may be the best basis to impeach Duterte,” Stratbase reported.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has previously discouraged lawmakers from pursuing impeachment complaints against the VP, stating that such actions “do not benefit” the Filipino people. Despite this, three impeachment complaints were lodged against Duterte in a single month last year.

The complaints cited various grounds for impeachment, including allegations of betrayal of public trust, culpable violation of the Constitution, and graft and corruption.

Central to these accusations is the unresolved issue of the P125 million in confidential funds from 2022, which Duterte and her office refused to address in the Congress.

At the start of 2025, reports emerged of a possible fourth impeachment complaint. House Secretary General Reginald Velasco confirmed receiving information from a member of the House majority about this development.

In a press conference last year, Duterte expressed openness to the impeachment cases filed against her, viewing them as a chance to address the allegations “exclusively” directed at her.
