Food for thought: Corporate volunteers tackle hunger one pack at a time

In observance of World Food Day 2024, Globe reinforced its commitment to addressing food insecurity in the Philippines, aligning with the global call for “Right to Foods for a Better Life and a Better Future—Leave No One Behind.”

Through its Hapag Movement and Employee Volunteering Engagement Program, Globe has provided crucial food support to individuals and families, including Indigenous Peoples (IP) groups, suffering from hunger.

The latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey shows that 16.8 percent of Filipinos experience moderate hunger, while 6.1 percent endure severe hunger. The situation is particularly dire in Mindanao and the Visayas, where hunger rates have nearly doubled, impacting low-income communities the most.

In response, Globe mobilized its employees and partners to provide aid to those in need. A food repacking marathon at The Globe Tower, in collaboration with Rise Against Hunger PH, saw 480 employees packing 3,060 food packs, which benefitted 18,360 individuals in disaster-affected areas.

Globe volunteers in Cebu City distributed food supplies to 220 families at the Cebu City Operation Second Chance Center (CCOSCC) and Balay Samaritano, in partnership with the Ayala Foundation.

“Globe’s commitment to nation-building is truly inspiring. Their employees’ dedication to volunteering to help our communities is commendable,” said Marlito Cabigas, senior associate for VisMin, Corporate Citizenship & Volunteerism, Ayala Foundation.

Additionally, Globe employees partnered with Tzu Chi Foundation Davao to support the Sto. Niño Central Elementary School in Talaingod, Davao del Norte, where they provided food packs and cybersecurity education to 150 parents, including IP members, and facilitated SIM distribution to promote digital inclusion.

“Tzu Chi Foundation Philippines is truly grateful for this partnership. This initiative fosters inclusivity, particularly as we focus on our Indigenous Peoples here in Davao,” said Mine Heart B. Tantoy, social welfare officer of Tzu Chi Davao.

“Our World Food Day initiatives reflect Hapag Movement’s mission to alleviate hunger, especially in disaster-stricken and impoverished communities,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe’s chief sustainability and corporate communications officer. “By mobilizing our employees and collaborating with trusted partners, we provide immediate relief while promoting sustainable development.”

Globe recently launched its #GlobeofGood Volunteering platform, making it easier for employees to engage in community activities.

As a socially responsible company, Globe continues to empower communities through sustainable initiatives, inviting all to join the Hapag Movement in making a meaningful impact.
