A successful interdiction operation at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 led to the seizure of over nine kilograms of methamphetamine hydrochloride, commonly known as shabu, with an estimated street value of P63-million.
The operation was conducted by a composite team consisting of the Bureau of Customs Anti-Illegal Drugs Task Force, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), the Philippine National Police Aviation Security Group, the Airport Police Department, the PNP Drug Enforcement Group, and the National Bureau of Investigation.
During the operation, a 33-year-old Zambian national, suspected to be a drug mule, was arrested after authorities discovered she was in possession of a black suitcase containing the illegal substance.
The suspect’s baggage underwent rigorous screening that included X-ray scanning, K9 inspections, and physical examinations, ultimately leading to the discovery of the drugs.
The suspect, along with the seized narcotics, was turned over to the PDEA for custodial investigation and the initiation of inquest proceedings for violating Republic Act 9165, known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act, as amended.
She is also facing charges under Republic Act 10863, which is the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act.
The Bureau of Customs is conducting a series of training sessions for examiners and police on how to properly profile incoming and outgoing passengers transporting illegal drugs and highly taxable items at the airport.
Since personnel are not allowed to open luggage, they rely on their expertise and the assistance of X-ray machines.
