Authorities are preparing for a worst-case scenario following the December 9 eruption of Mount Kanlaon amid threats of an inclement weather that could trigger lahar and other hazards, according to the Office of Civil Defense (OCD).
Strict evacuations are enforced within a six-kilometer radius due to risks of ashfall, pyroclastic flows, and lava flows. Over 20,000 individuals have been displaced, with temporary shelters established, including a tent city in Barangay Napoles.
Aid distribution, air and water quality monitoring, and livestock evacuation plans are underway.
Heavy rainfall from a potential Tropical Depression ‘Querubin’ further raised the risk of lahar flows in Negros Occidental, threatening 13 municipalities and over 644,000 residents.
Authorities urge residents to stay informed, avoid hazardous areas, and prioritize safety.
Emergency measures include mobile kitchens, supply distribution, and telecommunications support.
Raul Fernandez, Director of the OCD Western Visayas and head of the Regional Task Force Kanlaon, is urging residents to stay alert and prepared for the impending weather conditions.
“Your safety is our top priority,” Fernandez stated. “We must remain vigilant and prepared as we face the challenges posed by these weather conditions.”
