Iloilo City is tackling its classroom shortage head-on with the construction of P200-million worth of school buildings for eight public schools.
A simultaneous groundbreaking ceremony was held on Friday at Iloilo National High School (INHS), led by Education Secretary Juan Edgardo Angara, Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Jr., Uswag Ilonggo Party-list Rep. James Ang Jr., and Iloilo 3rd District Rep. Lorenz Defensor.
The projects include a four-classroom building at INHS, three-storey buildings at five elementary schools—Hibao-an, Arevalo, Iloilo Central, Uswag San Isidro, and Mandurriao—and additional four-classroom buildings at Fort San Pedro National High School and Iloilo City National High School.
Schools Division Superintendent Ma. Luz De Los Reyes emphasized the impact of the projects, noting that the additional classrooms are crucial to address the ongoing shortage caused by rising student enrollment.
“These projects will help reduce overcrowding in classrooms and provide a more conducive learning environment for students,” said De Los Reyes.
Ang secured the funding for the school buildings in response to the requests of Governor Defensor and Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas.
