The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) partnered with SM Prime Holdings Inc. (SMPHI) for air quality monitoring, supporting the government’s program to comprehensively manage air pollution.
“Land use and urban planning drive mobility-based and stationary emissions sources. These, in turn, have public health and climate change implications for people, ecosystems, and environments. Everyone is a stakeholder in the air we breathe and the quality of our living conditions. This donation reflects the importance of collective action to tackle air pollution and protect public health,” said DENR Secretary Maria Antonia Loyzaga.
DENR’s Environmental Management Bureau in the National Capital Region collaborated with SMPHI to establish a real-time Air Quality Monitoring Station (AQMS).
SMPHI signed up for the Adopt-a-CAMS (Continuous Ambient Air Monitoring System) Program of the EMB to align with the Philippine Clean Air Act or Republic Act 8749 and advance the country’s sustainable development goals.
“The AQMS serves as a vital tool for gathering data that will shape evidence-based policies, benefiting both the environment and the residents of Quezon City. By participating in the Adopt-a-CAMS program, SMPHI not only assists in strengthening EMB-NCR’s capacity to monitor and address air quality issues but also sets an example for other corporations to actively contribute to environmental protection and public welfare,” the DENR chief stated.
The AQMS is now operational and is located within the SMPHI property in Matandang Balara, Quezon City.
This station can measure particulate matter 10 and 2.5 (PM10 and PM2.5) and is seamlessly integrated with EMB-NCR’s Data Acquisition and Handling System (DAHS).
The connectivity allows for real-time transmission of air quality data to the bureau’s central database, enabling policymakers and environmental agencies to respond effectively to air quality concerns in Metro Manila.
