Senate President Francis Escudero on Tuesday called for restraint among senators following the filing of an impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte.
He emphasized that this constitutional process is crucial for ensuring accountability among public officials.
Escudero urged his colleagues to avoid making public comments on the allegations to maintain the integrity of any future proceedings.
“Should the Senate be called upon to act as an impeachment court, any perception of bias or pre-judgment would undermine not only the integrity of the impeachment trial but also the public’s trust in the Senate as an institution,” he said in a statement.
While impeachment is often viewed as a political maneuver, Escudero stressed the need for senators to approach it with impartiality and objectivity.
“This is what justice requires. This is what our people demand,” he stressed.
Acknowledging the divisive nature of impeachment proceedings, Escudero insisted they should not detract from the pressing legislative work ahead.
With midterm elections approaching in May 2025, he called on lawmakers to prioritize urgent national issues over political distractions.
“It is even more imperative for us to rise above the din of political noise and focus on the work that matters most to our people!” he exclaimed.
Escudero reaffirmed that despite differing political affiliations, unity of purpose is vital for sustaining progress in governance and economic development.
He ended by stating that while accountability mechanisms like impeachment are important in a democracy, they should not overshadow the Senate’s broader mission to serve and protect the interests of the Filipino people.
“Our fellow citizens have needs. Whether there is an impeachment or not, this cannot be neglected.”
