A representative of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) dismissed claims of discontent within the organization on Wednesday, following the breakdown of the alliance between President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Vice President Sara Duterte.
During a confirmation hearing at the Senate, AFP Deputy Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Jimmy Larida made this assurance when asked by Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada.
“Gen. Larida, are there any grumblings among the military because of recent events?” Estrada inquired.
“100 percent none, Sir,” Larida replied.
“Okay, very good. You have to be loyal to the Constitution, correct?” continued Estrada.
“Yes, Sir,” Larida assured.
In a separate interview, AFP Sergeant Major FCMS Feliciano Lazo also confirmed that the military, particularly the enlisted personnel, will remain loyal, professional, and non-partisan.
“Our soldiers are already enlightened; they won’t join anymore. They can no longer be enticed to join for their (Duterte’s) personal aspirations,” Lazo stated.
He emphasized that soldiers have had many negative experiences from being used for political purposes in the past, which has adversely affected their duty and family life.
Earlier, Malacañang referred to Duterte’s remarks as a significant insult to the AFP.
“Any attempt to seize power by violent means, including assassination, chaos, and rebellion, is unacceptable. Wait for the right time and follow the right process of our democracy,” Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin stated.
The AFP reiterated that there is no need for loyalty checks among its ranks and affirmed its commitment to remain loyal to the Constitution and the chain of command.
“We are facing greater challenges that require the strength of a unified country and armed forces. As a cornerstone of national stability, the AFP shall remain non-partisan with utmost respect for democratic institutions and civilian authority,” AFP spokesperson Col. Francel Margareth Padilla said.
“We assure the public that we trust each member of the AFP will remain professional in all circumstances,” she concluded.
