National Security Adviser Eduardo Año on Saturday announced that the recently enacted Maritime Zones Act and Archipelagic Sea Lanes Act empower the Philippines to assert its maritime jurisdiction amid ongoing disputes in the West Philippine Sea.
“These laws empower us to govern our maritime zones effectively while promoting lawful and peaceful maritime activities,” Año said.
The security official expressed gratitude to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. for signing the laws. He also acknowledged the Senate and House of Representatives for passing the landmark legislations, which align with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
The Maritime Zones Act defines the Philippines’ authority over its internal waters, territorial seas, archipelagic waters, Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), and continental shelf. It reinforces the Philippines’ legal standing, especially in the contested West Philippine Sea, in accordance with the 2016 Arbitral Ruling and international norms.
Meanwhile, the Archipelagic Sea Lanes Act provides regulations for the passage of foreign vessels and aircraft through the country’s archipelagic waters, reinforcing national security and respecting Philippine sovereignty.
“It establishes vital safeguards to protect both our maritime resources and the environment, reinforcing our responsibility to uphold the sanctity of our waters and airspace,” Año said.
He added that the new legislation enhances the Armed Forces’ capability to protect Philippine waters from potential infringement and that the government is committed to working with stakeholders for full enforcement of these measures.
