Magnitude-5.1 tectonic quake strikes Cebu

A strong earthquake measured at magnitude-5.1 struck the town of Poro in Cebu at 2:53 PM on Sunday, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Based on its latest information bulletin, Phivolcs traced the epicenter of the quake at 16 kilometers south 21 degrees west of the town at a depth of 11 kms.

The tremor was felt at Intensity 5 in Poro and Talisay City, Cebu as well as parts of Bohol and Leyte. Intensity 3 was reported in San Fernando, Cebu and other parts of Bohol, Leyte and Southern Leyte. The quake was also felt at lesser intensities in other areas of the affected provinces.

Phivolcs said aftershocks are expected from this seismic activity but damage is unlikely. State seismologists initially measured the quake at magnitude 5.0.
