The southwest monsoon rains or ‘habagat’ was blamed for the deaths of four people in Western Visayas, the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) reported on Tuesday.

Two of the casualties were confirmed in Antique while Negros Occidental and Guimaras reported one each.

According to the latest OCD situational report, 73,512 families, or 256,593 persons, are now affected by heavy rains and floods brought by the intense monsoon rains.

The highest number of affected families was noted in Antique at 30,908, followed closely by Negros Occidental with 30,663 families.

Aklan reported 11,083 affected families, while Bacolod City had 489. Meanwhile, Guimaras recorded 172 families, Iloilo City had 100, and Iloilo province had 97 families affected.

Two of the main roads in Antique are still impassable due to landslides, which was a big factor in complicating the relief and rescue efforts.

On top of the human costs, the storm also inflicted damage on 377 houses across the region; 42 of which were entirely destroyed, and 355 had partial damage.

Disaster response authorities are doing continuous relief efforts and closely monitoring the situation.
