Abdullah Macapaar, better known as “Commander Bravo,” has sought to apply for amnesty from the government for his part in political crimes committed as a leader of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

“He (Macapaar) already expressed his intention to apply for amnesty,” Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process Communications and Public Affairs Services Director Darwin Wee said.

However, Wee said there will be a “review process” for Commander Bravo, who led major military operations in the past.

“With amnesty, it obliterates your previous sins, sins that are borne out of your political struggle or cause; this does not cover heinous crimes,” he said.

According to Wee, Commander Bravo is among almost 800 former rebels who have applied for amnesty.

These applications included 686 former members of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army-National Democratic Front (CPP-NPA-NDF), 59 former MILF, 47 former Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF), and two former Rebolusyonaryong Partidong Manggagawa ng Pilipinas/Revolutionary Proletarian Army/Alex Boncayao Brigade (RPMP-RPA-ABB).

Wee said the government expects between 1,000 to 3,000 former MILF rebels to apply for amnesty offered by the government.
