Former presidential legal counsel Salvador Panelo on Saturday said he advised former President Rodrigo Duterte to run for vice president in the 2028 elections.
This is in the context of a possible political tandem with incumbent Vice President Sara Duterte running for president.
“Mr. President, my advice to you is to run for mayor for now. You need Davao… Run for mayor, then in 2028, run as vice president of your daughter (Sara),” Panelo said in a press conference.
“With a Duterte-Duterte tandem, it’s certain. Those who turned their backs on you will return because you are so strong,” he added.
According to Panelo, Duterte did not directly respond to his advice.
“He (Rodrigo) said, ‘Okay. Continue your Duterte-Duterte advocacy. We will see,’” Panelo said.
“He is open to everything. You will not be able to corner him. He will never tell you… He will only respond if there is clamor,” he added.
