The European Union and the United States sent humanitarian aid to victims of the widespread flooding caused by seasonal rains enhanced by Super Typhoon ‘Carina’ (international name: Gaemi) that affected the Philippines recently.
The aid was delivered to support communities in Bulacan, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Lanao Del Sur, Maguindanao del Norte, Maguindanao del Sur, Mindanao, the National Capital Region, and Pampanga.
The EU released €1.2 million (over P76 million) to provide emergency relief in the form of food assistance, access to safe water and sanitation facilities, and other essential services.
“The beginning of this year’s monsoon and typhoon season is proving very hard for people in the Philippines, and the EU is stepping up its assistance to the most affected populations. This funding will help provide much needed relief to people in Mindanao,” EU Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič said.
Washington through the US Agency for International Development (USAID), granted $1 million (P55 million) in humanitarian aid for victims of widespread flood following the announcement of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken during the 2+2 Foreign and Defense Ministerial dialogue in Manila.
In partnership with Catholic Relief Services and Action Against Hunger, this assistance will offer families access to food aid, hygiene kits, emergency shelter kits, clean water, and one-time cash transfers, “helping them to recover from the disaster safely and with dignity.”
“The United States is providing $1 million to ensure life-saving assistance reaches families across the archipelago who have been devastated by severe flooding and landslides,” USAID Acting Mission Director Betty Chung announced.
“We are committed to working with the Philippine government and people as they rebuild and recover from this disaster,” she further noted. /
The USAID have always been a partner of the Philippines’ response to catastrophic floods and rains in Mindanao and Central Luzon. The partnership includes logistical assistance to the Department of Social Welfare and Development and the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development.
