Makati City Mayor Abigail Binay backed the proposal of Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Juan Edgardo Angara to improve teacher benefits and working conditions in public schools.

She said the program reaffirms Makati City’s dedication to supporting the comprehensive growth and well-being of its educators as the School Year 2024-2025 officially commenced on Monday, July 29.

Binay said her administration for the past eight years has given priority to the welfare of national government employees serving in the city, including public school teachers—both residents and non-residents.

“We deeply value our public school teachers in Makati and their role in shaping the future of our youth. Teachers are the backbone of our education system, and their well-being is of paramount importance to us in Makati. We regard them as Makatizens who deserve our full support in every way possible,” she said.

The local government has been extending a wide range of benefits covering both personal and professional aspects of development for teachers as well as non-teaching personnel of the DepEd-Makati Office, she said.

On Monday, Mayor Binay also led the distribution of city-procured school gear and supplies at the Palanan Elementary School and San Isidro National High School.

These include the latest version of the iconic AB rubber shoes dubbed “AB 6.0” that some 35,861 students from kindergarten to senior high school, including SPED and pre-school levels will be getting for free, along with other supplies.

The other school items that were distributed were raincoats, boots, and jackets, school uniforms, a pair of black leather shoes, Japanese-inspired school bags, swimming gear, tumblers, hygiene kits, notebooks, papers, ball pens, and pencils.

“The City of Makati remains firmly committed to better education for the Makatizen youth. We are proud to note that our public school students continue to do justice to our substantial investments through many noteworthy accomplishments,” said Mayor Abby.
