Local disaster officials in Albay were alerted Thursday evening after receiving an Eruption Notification Form, informing them that a phreatic or steam-driven eruption was observed on Mayon Volcano at 6:16 p.m. July 18.
According to the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-Phivolcs), the volcano spewed a light gray ash and steam plume approximately 656 feet (200 meters).
“This notification is being issued as initial information on the volcano’s activity for the appropriate action of concerned agencies,” the notification read.
Based on its latest volcano bulletin, Phivolcs said Mayon remains at Alert Level 1, indicating abnormal conditions and suggesting that there is a slight increase in volcanic earthquake and steam/gas activity.
The public is reminded not to enter the six-kilometer radius permanent danger zone.
