The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has conducted a medical evacuation for a Chinese crew, who accidentally cut his left thumb while sailing about 20.69 nautical miles west of Semirara Port in Caluya, Antique.

The PCG said the 35-year-old second engineer of Hong Kong-flagged bulk carrier MV BBG Qinzhou was rescued at around 9:00 A.M. on Thursday, July 4. He required immediate treatment in a hospital setting after seriously injuring his thumb with a fan blade.

The foreign vessel departed Nansha, China and was heading towards Tanjung Bara, Indonesia, when the incident occurred.

In coordination with the captain and vessel’s agent, the PCG deployed BRP Kalanggaman (FPB-2404) to the rendezvous area at 1.5 nautical miles of Nogas Island, Anini-y, Antique.

The Coast Guard vessel safely evacuated the patient at around 6:00 P.M.

Four PCG medical personnel provided medical assistance while on their way to Muelle Loney Wharf in Iloilo City.

Upon arrival at 8:30 P.M., the PCG turned over the patient to the vessel’s agent, who handled his transportation to the nearest hospital for medical attention.
