Liberal Party remains in opposition, not keen on teaming up with Marcos administration—De Lima

The Liberal Party (LP) remains part of the opposition and has no plans of forging an alliance with President Marcos, even if his administration has been instrumental in securing the freedom of former Senator Leila de Lima.

De Lima, who serves as the party’s spokesperson, made this categorical statement herself in an interview aired Thursday morning on GMA News. She said the political stance of LP has not changed and any proposal to collaborate with the Marcos government is not being discussed.

“On the part of the Liberal Party, we have no such plans. We are not discussing it. If we have, our position there is no. We will not form an alliance (with the Marcos administration) because we are in the opposition,” she explained.

De Lima noted, however, that they will support the President on key issues as long as his position aligns with the party’s views like in handling the West Philippine Sea (WPS) dispute, for example.

“If there are issues that fit with our perspective, why not? I mean, that’s why we don’t just criticize for the sake of nitpicking,” she said mostly in Tagalog.

As such, De Lima said the LP is not interested in picking a side between the Marcos and Duterte factions because they don’t want to engage in mere politicking leading up to the 2025 midterm polls. – With Rolando Ng III
