Gatchalian hopes for continuity of education reforms amid Duterte’s DepEd exit

With Vice President Sara Duterte stepping down as Secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd), Senator Sherwin Gatchalian is calling for the sustained implementation of crucial education reforms to address the sector’s pressing challenges.

Gatchalian, who serves as the chairperson of the Senate Committee on Basic Education, has worked closely with Duterte, meeting weekly to tackle the nation’s educational issues.

Together, they launched initiatives under the Education Commission (EDCOM), a legislative body dedicated to assessing and improving the education system.

EDCOM is pivotal in their efforts to overhaul the education system. Gatchalian said it is essential to maintain these programs and avoid frequent policy shifts amid the ongoing education crisis.

The senator emphasized the importance of a smooth transition when Duterte’s resignation takes effect on July 19.

In light of Duterte’s departure, Gatchalian underscored the need for a thorough briefing for the incoming education secretary on the progress made so far.

He reflected on the collaborative efforts and regular consultations between EDCOM and DepEd under Duterte’s leadership.

When asked if he was surprised by Duterte’s resignation, Gatchalian admitted he did not see it coming. He said she has always been readily available whenever they needed her.

Highlighting a recent example, Gatchalian recalled an event focused on the Alternative Learning System (ALS), where the DepEd officials were fully engaged.

As the search for Duterte’s successor begins, Gatchalian is considering potential candidates but remains cautious.

The next secretary should possess a deep commitment to education and demonstrate the same political will that Vice President Duterte has shown, according to the senator.

Gatchalian also stressed the importance of having a leader capable of guiding the DepEd, along with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), through the myriad challenges facing the education sector.

Gatchalian expressed a desire for continuity within DepEd’s upper management, particularly among the undersecretaries.
