The administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has launched a comprehensive effort across government agencies to assist Filipino seafarers targeted by Houthi rebels in the Red Sea.
During a Saturday news forum, Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac revealed the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is actively collaborating with international partners to secure the release of 17 Filipino seafarers captured by Houthi rebels last year.
Efforts through the DFA include ongoing communications with foreign governments connected to the Houthi rebels to ensure the safe return of the seafarers.
Cacdac also addressed the DMW’s consideration of a sailing ban in the Red Sea following recent attacks.
“In light of this recent incident, we are reviewing this policy. So, just give us some time to review the policy. Just give us the room to review the policy,” Cacdac said.
“We had directed the ships carrying Filipino seafarers to divert. Now, they have the right to refuse sailing. That’s the declaration in partnership with the International Bargaining Forum that should be honored,” he added.
The review follows attacks on seafarers: 17 on the Galaxy Leader on November 11, 13 on the True Confidence on March 11 (resulting in two deaths), and 22 on the MV Tutor on Wednesday with 21 rescued and one still missing.
