Renowned stage director and writer Floy Quintos has passed away this morning due to a heart attack. He was 63.
His death was announced by his niece, Celina Quintos, in a Facebook post.
Floy was known for being one of the important figures in the Philippine Culture and Arts scene with his work spanning theater, film, and artifact collection.
He is known for writing screenplays for films such as Wating (1992), which was National Artist for Film Ishmael Bernal’s final film, Koronang Itim (1994) by filmmaker Jose Mari Avellana, Darna! Ang pagbabalik (1994) by Peque Gallaga and Lore Reyes, and Manananggal in Manila (1997) by director Mario O’Hara.
Floy has also written multiple plays such as St. Louis Loves Dem Filipinos, Atang: Dulang May Musika, Isang Panaginip na Fili, and Fake.
Throughout his career, Floy has also been the recipient of multiple Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature for his works such as Ang Kalungkutan Ng Mga Reyna (First Prize, One-Act Play in Filipino, 2008), An Evening At The Opera (First Prize, One-Act Play in English, 2011), Suor Clara (Second Prize, One-Act Play in Filipino, 2010), and Fluid (Second Prize, Full-Length Play in English, 2005).
Floy’s upcoming play “Grace,” which will be directed by his longtime collaborator Dexter M. Santos, is set to begin its run on May 25 post-humously.
Apart from his works in film and theater, Floy was also an expert when it comes to artifacts and culture with his antique store Gallery Deus, where he has been collecting Colonial and Ethnographic pieces from history.
Arrangements for Floy’s wake at the Arlington Memorial Chapels are still being made, according to Celina’s post. Further details have yet to be announced as of writing.
