Lace up and run with pride

Every year, LGBTQIA+ communities around the world come together for pride runs and marches. These events are more than just celebrations, they are powerful statements of unity, visibility, and progress.

This June, SM Supermalls is collaborating with RunRio to mount the first “Pride Run” happening at SM by the Bay, SM MOA Complex. As the name of the event suggests, it combines the athleticism of a fun run with the vibrant energy of a pride march.

Pride runs are celebrations of LGBTQIA+ identities. They create a space for people to express themselves freely, feel proud of who they are, and connect with a supportive community. At the SM Pride Run, according to RunRio President and CEO Rio de la Cruz, participants will be surrounded by thousands who share their values and experiences.

Finishers of the upcoming Pride Run will be given vibrant medals bearing colors of the pride flag

“This run is revolutionary since we haven’t done something of this magnitude before. At the height of the pandemic, we organized a virtual pride run and were thrilled with the results. Now that everything is back to normal, we are partnering with SM Malls and Bingo Plus for this opportunity,” De La Cruz said during the event launch held at SM Megamall.

“We’re happy that companies are reaching out and wanting to get involved in this event. Even though the event hasn’t happened yet, I’m already thanking our partners because I believe this is going to be a successful event. Additionally, our advocacy partner Love Yourself PH, their presence adds value and meaning to this run. So, let’s all run with love and pride for a tolerant and accepting Philippines,” De La Cruz continued.

Pride runs are also powerful tools for visibility and advocacy according to Love Yourself PH Executive Director Ronivin Pagtakhan. He said that they remind society that the LGBTQIA+ community exists and deserves equal rights and acceptance and by participating, people are taking a stand for inclusivity and making a statement of solidarity.

Runners will be given freebies like a Pride Run singlet, a race bib, and a timing chip

The SM Pride Run promises to be an unforgettable experience. It’s not just about competition; it’s a vibrant festival filled with music, entertainment, and a whole lot of fun. Imagine rainbow confetti showers, energetic drummers, and even a Best in Costume contest.

The SM Pride Run welcomes everyone – LGBTQIA+ individuals, their families, allies, casual runners, and seasoned athletes. There are 3K, 5K, and 10K distances, so you can participate regardless of your fitness level. There’s even a virtual run option for those who can’t make it to the venue.

Each runner will receive a Pride Run singlet, a race bib, and a timing chip. There are finisher’s medals specially designed for this maiden event.

“SM is dedicated to creating safe spaces for everyone. We believe in promoting inclusivity and acceptance, and this event is a fantastic way to do just that,” SM Supermalls SVP for Marketing Joaquin San Agustin.

The evening’s awarding ceremony will feature top-notch entertainment from queer artists and drag queens, making it a guaranteed party.

Various organizations support the SM Pride Run, including DigiPlus Interactive Corp., LoveYourselfPH, Pantay Inc., and the Metro Manila Pride Organization. These partnerships ensure that the event promotes inclusivity and fosters accessible healthcare and support for different communities.
