TUBUNGAN, Iloilo — A new P10-million tourist rest area (TRA) in Sitio Baldan, Barangay Igpaho here is set to be fully operational after six months of construction, promising a boost to local tourism.
Tourism Secretary Cristina Frasco led the ground-breaking ceremony on Friday, Aug. 25, with Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority assistant chief operating officer Jetro Nicolas Lozada. Iloilo provincial tourism officer Gilbert Marin, and Tourism regional director Crisanta Marlene Rodriguez, also in attendance.
“The town may be small, but big in heart, and even bigger in potential. Our hope is that this tourist rest area will support the successful tourism initiatives of Iloilo province and aid the tourism aspirations of Tubungan and its neighboring local government units,” Frasco said in her remarks.
Tubungan Mayor Roquito Tacsagon expressed gratitude for the project, which aims to attract more tourists to the municipality.
The project will feature a restroom, shower area, and a souvenir center for micro, small, and medium enterprises to sell their local products.
Frasco highlighted the infrastructure’s commitment to sustainability, with solar power facilities and a rainwater catchment system. “Our tourist rest area intends to be sustainable and will support Tubungan’s ecotourism initiatives, which I understand is the top priority here in the LGU.”
Marin noted that Igpaho is an eco-tourism destination with accessibility to nearby spots, including Antique. “It is ideal for biking and hiking activities, offering a beautiful panoramic view of areas between Iloilo and Negros, and part of Antique,” he noted.
The area also boasts a cool climate, akin to Barangay Bucari in Leon town, which is often referred to as “Little Baguio of Iloilo.”
The new TRA promises to enhance the tourism experience in Tubungan and highlights the region’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.
