The Taguig City government will implement road closures on Wednesday and Thursday in connection with the annual Taguig River Festival.
“A portion of General Luna Street from Mr. DIY to Global Oil in Barangay Tuktukan, will be temporarily closed from 10 p.m. on July 24 to 10 p.m. on July 25, 2024, for the Taguig River Festival,” the local government stated in its advisory.
Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Vehicles from Cayetano Boulevard can turn right at Vista Mall/Bagong Kalsada and then right on General Luna Street to reach Manuel L. Quezon Street. For those coming from Bagumbayan, they can turn right and then left to reach Cayetano Boulevard going to Pasig via Bagong Calzada.
The festival is an annual event held to express gratitude to Saint Anne, the patron saint of Taguig, for the abundant harvest of “banak” or sea mullet from the Taguig River, which addressed the food needs of the city residents in its early years.
According to legend, St. Anne gathered the natives of Taguig, specifically farmers and fisherfolk, known as “taga-giik” or threshers, by the river. This year’s three-day celebration, from July 24 to 26, includes various activities such as Pagpupugay kay Lola, Regatta (Karera ng mga Bangka), Indakan sa Daan, and Pagoda sa Ilog – a fluvial parade where boats carry the image of Saint Anne, the mother of Mary, along the Taguig River.
