From Manila to Manhattan: How Filipina creative director Nigel Garcia is shaping New York’s creative scene

From the bustling streets of Manila to the bright lights of New York City, Nigel Garcia has always had her sights set on something bigger. A creative director, producer, and content creator, she’s carved out a name for herself in the world’s most competitive city—defining what it means to be bold, ambitious, and unapologetically herself.

Nigel’s story isn’t just about success; it’s about pushing boundaries, embracing challenges, and refusing to settle. Her journey to New York has been anything but easy, but it’s this very journey that has shaped her into the creative powerhouse she is today.

A Leap of Faith from Manila to New York

Nigel’s career began in Manila, where she immersed herself in the creative industry, working with big-name brands like MAC Cosmetics, Estee Lauder, and Clinique. Her work was a mix of content creation and creative direction—producing shoots, managing campaigns, and building long-term relationships with her clients. Yet, despite her accomplishments, Nigel felt that her aspirations extended far beyond the city she called home.

“I wanted to do more, to be more. I knew I had untapped potential, and New York was the perfect platform to harness it,” she says, reflecting on her decision to leave Manila. It was a leap of faith—one that meant starting from scratch in a foreign city, with no safety net. But Nigel wasn’t deterred. Armed with a dream and a relentless work ethic, she packed her bags and headed to New York in 2022.

The New York Hustle

New York isn’t for the faint-hearted. The city moves fast, the competition is fierce, and everyone is vying for the top spot. But for Nigel, the challenges of New York only fueled her drive. She enrolled at Parsons School of Design to study Fashion Marketing and Communications, which opened doors to major brands like Balmain, Proenza Schouler, and Stone and Strand.

“New York forces you to be adaptable,” she explains. “Things change quickly here, and you have to be able to pivot without losing sight of the bigger picture. This adaptability has become one of Nigel’s greatest strengths, whether she’s working on a digital campaign or creating user-generated content (UGC) for top brands.

Today, she’s the Manager for Content and Social Media at Argento Vivo, a New York-based jewelry brand, where she leads everything from creative campaigns to social media strategy. It’s a role that allows her to blend creativity with strategy—two things she’s always been passionate about.

“What I do here is an extension of what I started in Manila, but on a much larger scale. It’s more responsibility, but it’s exactly what I’ve been working towards,” she shares.

A Testament to Growth

For Nigel, success isn’t defined by fame or fortune. It’s about having the freedom to make choices that align with her values and her vision for the future. “Success, to me, is about freedom—the ability to pursue what I love while also prioritizing the other important aspects of my life,” she says.

Her journey from Manila to New York is a testament to her belief that growth happens outside of your comfort zone. “I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t embrace that,” she reflects. “Taking that leap was terrifying, but it was the best decision I ever made.”

The Power of Adaptability

What sets Nigel apart in the ever-evolving world of content creation is her ability to bridge the gap between creativity and strategy. Her experience as a creative director has given her a holistic view of storytelling, allowing her to create content that is not only visually captivating but also aligned with brand goals. At the same time, her hands-on experience in content creation has made her adaptable, quick-thinking, and able to deliver high-quality work under tight deadlines.

“The fusion of both roles—creative direction and content creation—keeps me sharp. It’s what allows me to stay ahead in such a fast-paced industry,” she explains.

Nigel’s journey is far from over. With her current role at Argento Vivo and her growing list of collaborations with global brands, the future looks bright. But for Nigel, it’s not just about career achievements—it’s about staying true to herself, her roots, and her passion for storytelling.

“The future version of me is my biggest inspiration,” she says. “Every action I take is shaping who I want to become, and I’m excited for what’s to come.”

As a Filipina making waves in New York, Nigel Garcia is proof that with courage, hard work, and an unwavering belief in yourself, anything is possible.
