Metro Manila’s water concessionaires are increasing their residential rates for the east and west zone customers starting Jan. 1, 2025.
Manila Water Company said its residential rate now stands at P61.04 per cubic meter, representing an increase of P5.95 from the previous rate of P55.08.
“This is the third tranche of the tariff adjustment based on the approved service improvement plan as per rate rebasing for 2023-2027 which is to ensure the improved delivery of water and wastewater services for the East Zone,” Manila Water said in a statement.
Manila Water said it spent P32.668 billion on water and wastewater projects during the period, accounting for 81 percent of its capital expenditure target.
Maynilad Water Services said it spent 83 percent of its capex target for 2023-2024, amounting to P47.591 billion.
For Maynilad customers, the residential rate increased by P7.32 per cubic meter, bringing the all-in average to P65.62 per cubic meter, up from P58.30 in the last quarter of 2024.
Maynilad said the 2025 tariff adjustment is part of the company’s 2023-2027 business plan, as approved by the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System in 2022.
“Our commitment to invest over P163 billion in capital projects to improve the water and wastewater infrastructure in the West Zone necessitates the timely implementation of these staggered adjustments. We remain vigilant in meeting our business plan commitments and are pleased that the corresponding tariff adjustments are being implemented as planned,” the company said Thursday.
The rate increases were approved by the MWSS-Regulatory Office (MWSS-RO) in December 2024.
MWSS-RO chief regulator Patrick Ty said the regulatory body considered the actual capital expenditures incurred by the water concessionaires from 2023 to 2024 when it approved the rate hikes.
Ty said the approval of tariff increases is contingent upon the water concessionaires spending a substantial portion of their planned capital expenditures.
