Marine protected areas (MPAs) managed by communities partnering with Malampaya Foundation Inc. (MFI) secured top honors at both the 2024 Palawan PEARL Awards and the Oriental Mindoro STAR Awards.
The awards recognize the effectiveness of grassroots conservation efforts and collaborative partnerships fostered by MFI with local communities, government units, and other stakeholders.
The Palawan PEARL Awards honored MFI partner communities with several accolades. These include Bulalacao MPA (Coron), an MFI partner since 2012, which secured the top prize for Best-Managed MPA.
San Miguel MPA (Linapacan), a partner since 2013, earned 2nd place for Best Locally-Managed MPA. San Fernando MPA (El Nido), a partner since 2016, received 3rd place for Best Community-Managed MPA. Decabaitot MPA (Linapacan), established in 2019, was recognized as the 4th Best Emerging MPA. The Bulalacao MPA further distinguished itself with Minor Award for Best-Managed Coral Reef MPA and Minor Award for Best in Law Enforcement MPA.
At the Oriental Mindoro STAR Awards, all three top provincial MPAs were MFI partner sites. These are Punta Ilag Fish Sanctuary (San Teodoro) (1st place, MFI site since 2018); Sta. Theresa Fish Sanctuary (Gloria) (2nd place, MFI site since 2014); and Song of the Sea Fish Sanctuary (Pola) (3rd place, MFI site since 2016).
The PEARL and STAR Awards assess MPAs based on ecological, social, legal, financial, and governance criteria. These accolades demonstrate the comprehensive and sustainable approach MFI and partners employ in marine conservation.
“Local communities have actively managed their coastal ecosystems, fostering awareness and participation through grassroots efforts,” said MFI. “Local champions have emerged to lead ongoing conservation, supported by partnerships with government and non-government stakeholders, ensuring long-term success.”
