Japan bringing autonomous bus to New Clark City

Japan-based Zenmov, in partnership with MC Metro Transport Operation Inc., launched the Philippines’ first publicly accessible autonomous bus service in New Clark City, Tarlac on Tuesday.

The groundbreaking initiative utilizes a transportation cloud system called Smart Mobility Operation Cloud (SMOC).

Bases Conversion Development Authority (BCDA) executive vice president and chief operating officer Gisela Kalalo said the project would provide valuable insights from Japan’s advanced transport system and lead to a more sustainable and scalable transport solution in Clark.

“By integrating their smart autonomous vehicle technology, we ensure a more sustainable and scalable transport solution here in Clark. This will positively transform the everyday lives of those living and working within Clark — making it easier to get around, reducing traffic congestion, and promoting a green and low-carbon environment,” said Kalalo.

The launch follows agreements signed in 2023 between BCDA, Zenmov, MC Metro and New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), establishing a smart mobility demonstration program funded entirely by NEDO and Zenmov.

The demonstration project will introduce a new public transportation system called Primary Rapid Transit, a “last mile” service utilizing SMOC.

The system will operate on select routes in New Clark City, Clark Freeport Zone and Clark International Airport, allowing Zenmov to optimize operational efficiency based on travel demand data.

Zenmov and MC Metro are also deploying low-carbon electric vehicles and e-bikes, along with smart poles, drones, and charging stations, to collect real-time data for traffic management.
