DITO vows to protect subscribers against mobile scams

DITO Telecommunity on Tuesday vowed to protect its subscribers amid rising mobile scams in the country.

“Even before the issuance of the National Telecommunications Commission Memorandum relating to added SIM registration guidelines, DITO had already implemented the mandated face liveliness, live selfie, optical character recognition (OCR), facial recognition and matching features to increase security,” DITO chief administrative officer Adel Tamano said.

Tamano said the unique nature of registration via the DITO App has been one of the cornerstones of the DITO commitment to subscriber security.

DITO placed all unregistered SIMs in deactivated state in December 2023. DITO SIMs which are not registered may never have incoming and outgoing SMS and calls. OTPs from OTT service providers will never be received by any DITO number unless the SIM is registered.

DITO has trained its registration system to recognize 12 IDs, including passport, National ID, Social Security System ID, driver’s license, National Bureau of Investigation clearance, Unified Multi-Purpose ID, license to own and possess firearm ID, Philippine Regulations Commission ID, Philippine Postal ID, overseas Filipino worker’s ID, Taxpayer Identification Card and Government Service Insurance System ID.

DITO also deployed a system which only accommodates in-app captured photos, it disallows the uploading or attaching of stock photos.

The company deployed data and face matching functionality in its registration system. Data captured through the OCR, including the photo shown in the ID, are matched with the encoded information and the selfie taken.

DITO implemented face liveness check as early as 26 October 2023. The functionality coupled with the in-app capturing of selfies, enabled the registration system to detect movement and deny non-human image

DITO’s cumulative successful registrants reached more than 14 million across various regions in the Philippines as of June 30, 2024.

It has barred 19,050 fraudulent accounts aside from those deactivated for failure to comply with the registration requirements from Aug. 1, 2023 to July 3, 2024.
