McDonald’s, Holcim team up to decarbonize their operations

Fast-food chain operator McDonald’s Philippines and leading building solutions provider Holcim Philippines teamed up to accelerate decarbonization efforts and promote circularity within their operations.

“Together with partners like Holcim which continuously innovate to be better for the planet, we’ll be able to learn and integrate solutions as we grow and open more new stores. With every action that we take for the environment, we’re planting the seeds for a greener and more sustainable future,” said McDonald’s Philippines president and chief executive Kenneth Yang.

The partnership aims to expand McDonald’s Green and Good platform, featuring restaurants built and operated with a significantly lower environmental footprint. Holcim will provide building solutions with a lower carbon footprint and fewer virgin materials to further enhance these stores’ sustainability.

Green and Good stores were launched in 2021 and already incorporate various sustainable practices such as recycling steel building frames, eco-pavers, and bricks made with shredded plastic, reducing energy consumption through the use of solar panels, LED lights, smart air conditioning systems, low-power water heaters and heat-reflective glass.

A key aspect of the collaboration is sustainable waste management through Geocycle, Holcim’s technology that converts qualified waste into alternative fuels and raw materials for cement production. The practice reduces reliance on landfills and virgin resources.

Holcim contributes to the partnership with its own range of sustainable solutions with its low-carbon blended cement, repurposed demolished concrete, aerated blocks, and permeable concrete.

“We thank McDonald’s for trusting Holcim to elevate the sustainability of Green and Good stores. This partnership strengthens our commitment to environmental responsibility,” said Holcim Philippines president and chief executive Horia Adrian.

He said the collaboration between McDonald’s and Holcim sets a positive example for businesses to prioritize sustainability and environmental responsibility.
