In a world where borders often seem like barriers, Jhev Aron Voluntate from Cavite stands as a testament to how determination and opportunity can bridge gaps.

At 20 years old, Voluntate is not only making history, but also paving the way for future generations. He is the first Filipino student at Kao-Yuan Vocational High School of Technology and Commerce in Kaoshiung City, Taiwan.

He is one of the students benefiting from the Taiwan government’s Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC) and the Taipei Economic Cultural Office (TECO) Philippines scholarship program.

The Taiwan-Philippine Education Development Foundation (TPEDF), led by chief operating officer Allan Lin, shoulders the plane ticket and baggage allowance of the students.

Voluntate started his journey to Taiwan during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2022. He had to quarantine for seven days and tested positive for the virus. Despite those challenges, he stayed brave and soon adapted to his new surroundings.

As a third-year senior high school student, he is not only thriving academically but also preparing for the next step in his educational journey.

Scheduled to graduate in 2025, he plans to continue his studies in Taiwan under the prestigious 3+4 Study Program. This will allow him to earn a bachelor’s degree, furthering his dream of a successful career in computer science.

He currently interns at a local factory, gaining practical skills and real-world experience. Balancing school and work taught him hard work, responsibility and patience. His earnings help cover his living expenses and support his family in the Philippines.

“I am able to pay for my meals and my fees in school and dormitory. I am also capable of helping my family financially and at the same time, enjoy life,” Voluntate said.

“During my free time, I go to the mall or bike around Taiwan to enjoy the scenery and bask in its culture. I like living in Taiwan because I am independent and have liberty,” he said.

He said living independently in a foreign country has broadened his horizons, making him more open-minded about different customs and traditions. Being surrounded by students from various countries has enriched his cultural understanding and fostered personal growth too.

As Voluntate continues to carve his path in Taiwan, his journey stands as a powerful example of how one young scholar’s courage and ambition can cross borders and create opportunities, not just for himself but for others who will follow in his footsteps.
