JC A. Clarito, the 2016 FISU Student Ambassador, has been designated by the Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines as the Director of the FESSAP Badminton Club that will oversee the qualifying tournament for the 31st Summer Universiade in Chengdu, China.
The Universiade was originally slated this year in August, but was reset for next year due to the ongoing crisis of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The International University Sports Federation Executive Committee has announced the new schedule date of the Chengdu Universiade, which will be officially staged from June 26 to July 7, 2022.
The FISU World University Games are held every two years in different cities. This celebration of international university sports and culture draws many thousands of student-athletes together to compete, making it one of the world’s largest and most prestigious multi-sport festivities.
Embracing the FISU motto of “Today’s Stars, Tomorrow’s Leaders,” the summer edition of the FISU World University Games incorporates educational and cultural aspects, encouraging student-athletes from around the world to combine high sports performance with their intellectual pursuits.
The two-week FISU World University Games program includes 15 compulsory sports, the number of which has been increased several times in recent years. In 2011, archery became part of the program in the Shenzhen Universiade. In 2021, badminton will also become a compulsory sport.
“The rescheduled games give FESSAP more time to prepare for the qualifying tournament,” said JC Clarito, an athlete from the University of Perpetual Help-Laguna.
The FESSAP Badminton Club was set to conduct the qualifying rounds in November instead of this month in Laguna, bringing more time for the colleges to participate in the qualifying tournament.
Clarito will have to work out an operational plan in cooperation with different league organizations located in the Southern Tagalog Region, from the Cavite Athletic Association of the Philippines, State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association and Private Colleges and Universities of Region IV and Region 1.
Moreover, the FESSAP expects to beef up its financial resources with the arrival of more funding for its projects and international sports participation, said Prof. Robert Milton Calo, Chairman of the FESSAP Membership and Monitoring Committee.
The tournament is open to all collegiate athletes from ages 18 to 25 years old.
