Caloocan gets DOH praise, DA urban farming program

The Department of Health has praised the City Government of Caloocan after the DOH inspected the Kanlungan Drug Rehabilitation Complex that was temporarily made a quarantine facility for Persons Under Investigation (PUIs) for the coronavirus.

The DOH inspection team also found that the city has complied with health safety standards against COVID-19.

Dr. Evelyn Cuevas, City Health Officer, confirmed that “the hard-working city health workers at all quarantine facilities carry out the protocols such as physical distancing, wearing a mask and hygiene maintenance.”

The Kanlungan Drug Rehablitation quarantine facility has a 40-bed capacity, and only one person occupies a double-deck bunk. Only PUIs showing mild symptoms will be accepted in the quarantine facility, Cuevas noted.

They will be immediately subjected to swab tests and transferred to a hospital once they are diagnosed with the disease, she added.

Meanwhile, the city government successfully launched its Urban Agricultural Program in partnership with the Department of Agriculture (DA) and the Philippine Seed Industry Associate (PSIA) at the Caloocan North City Hall.

As Mayor Oscar “Oca” Malapitan’s representative, City Administrator Oliver Hernandez and Agriculture Secretary William Dar signed a memorandum of agreement with PSIA President Dr. Mary Ann Sayoc.

Hernandez expressed Mayor Oca's sincere gratitude for being chosen by the DA and PSIA to be part of an important and useful project amid the pandemic.

“The urban agricultural program is already a part of our city's annual budget and is included in our city's comprehensive development plan," he added.

To start the project, the DA and PSIA distributed the seeds and implants to the barangay captains who attended the event.

PSIA also provided a free drip irrigation system for the city garden demo and free-range native chickens from the DA.
