PSC considering financial assistance to PH athletes

Financial assistance will be provided to national athletes and coaches affected by the ongoing enhanced community quarantine.

A final decision will be known on Friday, when President Duterte has already decided if the present measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus pandemic will be lifted or extended.

The PSC board discussed details of the possibility of setting up an amelioration program for the athletes in a special board meeting.

The meeting on Tuesday was presided by Chairman William I. Ramirez via video conferencing.

Executive Director and Finance Bureau chief Atty. Guillermo Iroy has been tasked to do a feasibility study of the program against the budget of the agency.

Among the concerns of the PSC is the plight of national athletes training here and abroad.

The agency is considering plans to help bring back national athletes training abroad for the Tokyo Olympics and other international competitions. This will be done once quarantine measures imposed by the government are over.

The agency is reviewing the status of weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, pole vaulter EJ Obiena and gymnast Carlos Yulo, who have been staying put in Malaysia, Italy and Japan, respectively.

These athletes have been kept from travelling home following lockdowns implemented by the countries they are in to help check the pandemic.

Diaz has been training in Malaysia since January after travel restrictions were imposed following the initial threat of the pandemic that emerged in Wuhan. Her stay has been extended after the Malaysian stretched their lockdown till the end of April.

Obiena is currently doing fitness training in his dormitory in Formia, an Italian seaside town located between Rome and Naples.

Italy is among the hardest coronavirus-hit countries in Europe.

Yulo continues to train and study while in Tokyo, Japan, which is limiting travel to residents and foreigners alike.

More than 800 members of the national team are also being continuously monitored.

So far, they have remained healthy and free from any health issues related to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

No signs of sickness and symptoms of having contracted COVID-19 have been detected from them.
