Journalist Arlyn Dela Cruz holds first art exhibit at Movida

She is known first and foremost as a journalist, having made a name for herself with the TV networks ABC 5, ABS-CBN and later the Philippine Daily Inquirer. Through the years, she was able to publish her first book and direct movies. Now, Arlyn Dela Cruz wants also to be known as an artist.

Dela Cruz held her first art exhibit which she titled “Hindi Ako Pintor” at Movida Fashion + Food Club, the newest hangout place located along P. Burgos Street, Poblacion, Makati City on January 30.  There, she showcased 16 paintings, which mostly featured women she had encountered over the years.

Arlyn suffered from a stroke last June 2019 and as part of her recovery process, and on the prodding of actress Elizabeth Oropesa, she started to paint. It was through painting that Arlyn was able to fully regain her motor skills.

“I am truly grateful to Elizabeth Oropesa because if it was not for her, I don’t think I would have the courage to start painting and stage this art exhibit,” Arlyn said in her remarks during the opening of the exhibit.

“I turned to painting to relax and recover from my health issues, and after surviving colon cancer and a stroke, I realized that life is a celebration and that I should take this opportunity to do the things I want to do.”

When Arlyn was fully convinced she had developed enough material to stage an art exhibit, she asked a friend, Anne Dela Cruz, to help her find a venue that would be willing to showcase her works of art.

“I thought to myself that since I was not known at all as an artist, no gallery would want to showcase the work of a newbie like me,” she said. “So, I asked Anne to help me find a venue that would be willing to sponsor my art exhibit, and we were very fortunate that Ido Gurevich agreed to accommodate our request at Movida.”

Movida Fashion + Food Club formally opened for operations on January 15. It is a new concept that provides a fusion of international dishes and provides live music every night. It is also open to hosting private events like birthday parties and corporate events.

“The idea of turning a place like Movida Fashion + Food Club was very novel, and we are working to come up with a part two sometime in the near future,” Arlyn said.

Arlyn’s paintings will be on display at Movida Fashion + Food Club until February 5. It is located at 5050 P. Burgos Street, Poblacion, Makati City. Kindly send Arlyn a private message in her Facebook account if you wish to purchase any of the paintings that are on display at Movida.
