The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) and the Bureau of Copyright and Related Rights (BCRR) are set to launch a new online platform to strengthen copyright protection and facilitate copyright registration searches.
IPOPHL director-general Rowell Barba said the copyright registration search would provide a user-friendly way for artists and creators to check the copyright registration status of their works.
“This is a significant step towards establishing a unified national copyright registry in the Philippines,” Barba said during the opening of the 5-day Philippine International Copyright Summit 2024.
The system will be updated monthly and eventually include records from the National Library of the Philippines.
IPOPHL is also working to become an ISNI-registration agency. ISNI stands for International Standard Name Identifier, a system used by libraries, publishers and rights management organizations worldwide.
IPOPHL said issuing ISNI to Filipino authors, artists and organizations would increase their visibility and attract potential investors.
The BCRR also released new fair use guidelines to clarify the principles and scenarios that allow the use of copyrighted material without infringement.
The guidelines cover areas such as private performances, news reporting, judicial proceedings, and works for the visually impaired.
The BCRR is working to launch a Public Domain Registry, which will list Filipino authors whose works have entered the public domain. This will allow creators to access and repurpose these works, fostering innovation and creativity.
