SONA 2024: Marcos commends success of Palarong Pambansa, spurs Paris-bound Philippine athletes 

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Monday lauded the successful run of the recently concluded Palarong Pambansa in Cebu, and assured the public during his third State of the Nation Address (SONA) that the government will continue supporting these health-enhancing sports programs. 

“Nailunsad na namang muli ang taunang Palarong Pambansa matapos ang tatlong taon na pagkakatigil nito dahil sa pandemiya. Binabati natin ang Marikina at Cebu, at ang kagawaran ng edukasyon sa kanilang matagumpay na pagtatanghal ng mga palarong ito,” he said.

The President remarked that grassroots and sports-for-all programs are back in the mainstream, catering to Filipinos of all ages.

“Through these, we also set forth our youth on the same well-established path that has taken some of our national champions and renowned athletes to sporting greatness,” he said, continuing to congratulate the country’s representative athletes at the Olympic Games Paris 2024.  

“As we speak, 28 of our finest athletes are competing in Paris now for the glory of the Philippines. Let us wish them well and the best of luck,” Marcos added. 

During the upcoming Paris Games, 22 Filipino athletes will be representing the Philippines in the events of boxing, gymnastics, weightlifting, golf, pole vault, hurdles, swimming, judoka, rowing, and fencing. 

Meanwhile, the remaining six Filipino athletes will vye for gold at the Paralympics which will be kicking off in August.
